Lee Wellman has become a first time author with his release of MY QUARTER-LIFE CRISIS: How an Anxiety Disorder Knocked Me Down, and How I Got Back Up (Tucket Publishing 2006).

This book is a self-help memoir. Lee candidly discusses his battle with an anxiety disorder that crept up on him one idle Tuesday afternoon. Most importantly, Lee shares with all the steps he took and the strategies (Chapter 10—The Cheat Sheet) he developed that were essential in overcoming his battle with anxiety, fear, panic, and even moderate depression.

What’s amazing about his story is that Lee never aspired to be an author. He is a salesman by trade and a marketing expert by degree, yet became an author by heart. Lee’s compelling story and debilitating experiences burdened him with a sense of responsibility to help others! This book was spurned from that alone—his desire to help others by telling his story.

Lee’s quarter-life crisis was a direct result of his lack of knowledge on such issues (anxiety, panic, fear, and depression) along with his limited understanding of his own personality—that drove him to achieve, win, and succeed—to the point of becoming a perfectionist. His constant focus on the future and what he ultimately wanted out of life not only contributed to his struggle but kept him from living his life in the present moment.

In his book Lee bashes the age-old stigmas that anxiety is for the weak, the unsuccessful, or the uneducated person. In fact, Lee describes just the opposite. He explains how anxiety affects highly motivated, intelligent, driven, and caring people. Lee’s story resonates with many because he was on top of the world when his anxiety set in. He is a well-educated MBA with a successful job and career. He has a loving family and great friends. He’s healthy, strong and athletic—a college All-American athlete nonetheless. Why would anxiety strike him? More importantly, how could it strike him? Lee’s point is that if it could affect him, it can affect anyone—and that’s why he’s speaking out. Just like writer Jennifer Lord (The Heights Newspaper, Boston, MA) wrote, “It appears, that by most standards, Wellman is one of the many suburban-bred, private college-learned, kings of our world. What does he have to panic about?”
